Well, there you have it, 10 books like Mistborn. It’s classic fantasy at its finest, so if you like “the old stuff” then I think you’ll enjoy this book, which is why it makes the list in the first place. There’s interdimensional war going on and our hero is kind of thrust into it against his will. I stopped reading the series after this one, so perhaps it improves greatly throughout the rest of the books, but if you’re looking for a book like Mistborn, you’re probably interested in magic and magic systems.Ĭertainly this book has an interesting premise and magic plays a part. It’s still epic fantasy, but despite its title there is a surprisingly little magic in this book. Ignoring what I said above, this one is probably the actual least book like Mistborn. This book is number 10 on the list for a reason.

I grew more fond of Jorg throughout this book. I wondered: if I stood out there, in the flood, would the rain wrap a grey life and make it shine? Should I stand, arms spread, and raise my face? Let it wash me clean. “The air hung heavy with the metallic scent of rain. His ‘superpowers’ that he picks up help of course, but it only works because he’s prepared to risk it all. It often seems Jorg gets out of trouble by mere luck, but he’s smart and can easily piece together different sources of information to make it one grand idea. He’s in a bit of a pickle, as twenty thousand men march toward the gates of his castle, far outnumbering him. He’s haunted by the ghost of a young boy, has a mysterious copper box, and wants to be with the woman who sides with his enemy (not to mention she hates him). We follow Jorg Ancrath again, now as a King. Mike died in 2006 and his work has largely disappeared from print since, with battered copies of cheap paperbacks commanding hundreds of dollars in the used book market. John M Ford - AKA Mike Ford - ( previously) was a spectacular and varied science fiction writer who performed brilliantly across a wide range of genres and formats, from RPGs (GURPS, Paranoia) to licensed Star Trek fiction (his "How Much for Just the Planet" effectively created Klingon fandom) to fantasy novels like The Dragon Waiting, which grip and delight the reader in ways to rival George RR Martin or Ursula K LeGuin.

Dyson Repairs Dallas (Texas), Dyson Service Centers Falling into a romantic entanglement with Rhys and his equally handsome and mysterious brother, Jake, soon draws Thea into a sensual mythic underworld as irresistible as it is dangerous. Away from her family and her Eastern European homeland for the first time, she struggles to adapt to unfamiliar American ways and the challenges of college life-including an enigmatic young man whose brooding good looks and murky past intrigue her. In this enchanting and darkly imaginative debut novel full of myth, magic, romance, and mystery, a Princeton freshman is drawn into a love triangle with two enigmatic brothers, and discovers terrifying secrets about her family and herself-a bewitching blend of Twilight, The Secret History, Jane Eyre, and A Discovery of Witches.Īrriving at Princeton for her freshman year, Thea Slavin finds herself alone, a stranger in a strange land. If you can suspend your disbelief long enough to buy into the whole circumstances of these two girls (one's mom left her 8-year-old and her keys in her car unattended while she ran into the minimart to buy something at the same moment when the minimart was being robbed several years later the girls happen to meet at the same summer camp? and oh, the kidnapped girl's mom's cousin also spent time in prison, as did (other kid at camp) Jeremy's dad?), there's still the whole race thing. The other (big) beef I had with this book was that it felt incredibly manipulated and forced. So, that was kinda pointless, though easier to read than some other books in verse I can think of. Which is maybe just as well since they were likely to miss it in the first place, but still-a little reward for the trouble would've been nice. In the author's note at the end, the reader goes back through In the words at the end of the longest lines. There's never been a great option for readers who want a neatly organized and affordable series of graphic novels. DC has never reprinted Johns' work in an ideal form before. But given that Johns' run ended back in 2013, what makes this new book so special? Haven't Green Lantern collections been readily available to new readers for years at this point? Yes, but with one significant caveat. And even several years after its conclusion, the impact of Johns' work is still being felt in the DCU. It really is the perfect jumping-on point for anyone interested in characters like Hal, Sinestro, Carol Ferris and Atrocitus. (Image Credit: DC Comics)In short, Johns' Green Lantern run is bold, ambitious and expertly crafted while still being completely accessible to newcomers. And on top of everything else, Johns proved that Sinestro is one of the greatest villains in superhero comics.Īrt by Ethan Van Sciver. Through stories like The Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night, Johns and his collaborators introduced an entire spectrum of Lantern Corps and greatly expanded the mythology fueling the Green Lantern Corps. This is the run that managed to not only redeem Hal Jordan following his corruption as Parallax, but make him a more dynamic and exciting hero than ever. Whether you judge it by its sheer quality of its lasting impact on the larger franchise, Johns' Green Lantern run has rightfully become the gold standard for Green Lantern stories. A lovely, moving, and ultimately devastating book.” - Chang-rae Lee “With searing witness and quietly prodigious song here is a volume that speaks sharp truths to those who would wish the forgetting of one of the darkest hours of humanity. Moving readers through time, space, and different cultures, and bringing vivid life to the testimonies and confessions of the victims,Yoon takes possession of a painful and shameful history even while unearthing moments of rare beauty in acts of resistance and resilience, and in the instinct to survive and bear witness. “What is a body in a stolen country,” Yoon asks. In wrenching language, A Cruelty Special to Our Species unforgettably describes the brutalities of war and the fear and sorrow of those whose lives and bodies were swept up by a colonizing power, bringing powerful voice to an oppressed group of people whose histories have often been erased and overlooked. In her arresting collection, urgently relevant for our times, poet Emily Jungmin Yoon confronts the histories of sexual violence against women, focusing in particular on Korean so-called “comfort women,” women who were forced into sexual labor in Japanese-occupied territories during World War II.
